- U.S. Students falling short in science: Most students scored below proficient in science on the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress, according to results released Tuesday. About two-thirds of fourth-graders, 70% of eighth-graders and 79% of high-school seniors did not meet proficiency standards. Science educators say the disappointing results show science has taken a backseat to reading and math on the state tests. The Obama administration has pledged to focus more on instruction in science and other subjects as part of a rewrite of No Child.
